Who are these “political elite warmongers” that are “carelessly fomenting fear and tension between nuclear powers”? You know how it is. Rich people just love wiping out civilization. It is what rich people live for. And that is why we need socialism, so we can eat the rich and be done with them!
But seriously, Tulsi Gabbard is a demagogue ready to blame nuclear war on some imaginary bunch of rich people, appealing to envy and resentment. Meanwhile, our domestic socialists are ready to burn the country down because they had their heads filled with Marxist sewage in school. What idiot believes that elite Americans are threatening the world with nuclear war? But then, Tulsi Gabbard is part of the political elite, and she most certainly has a bomb shelter. Or did I miss something?
But wait! Tulsi Gabbard is also America’s Director of National Intelligence. Does her rhetoric belong to America and NATO, or does it belong to the socialist camp? What on earth just came out of her mouth?
Of course, the world is getting closer to nuclear war. But rich people are not the ones proliferating nuclear weapons. It is Russia that has enabled North Korea and Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. And now it appears that Israel may be about to strike Iran preemptively, to stop Iran from building a large nuclear arsenal. Obviously, the situation has grown from bad to worse. There are evacuations of non-essential U.S. personnel in Iran, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The UK Maritime Trade Operations, a British maritime security agency, has recently issued a warning for ships transiting the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz. War may be days or hours away.
Nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran have stalled, even as the talks between Ukraine and Russia go nowhere. Tensions are rising as the Russians continue to threaten NATO by forward deploying nuclear and conventional weapons. While Russia denies it is a threat to NATO, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov says that NATO should have been dissolved when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. The Russians are aggrieved that the United States did not leave Europe to them. (They are entitled to own it, right?)
Here is a question nobody is thinking over. Why has Russia embarked on this course of war? An interesting document has appeared from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR), published in New York on 5 June 2025. It is a statement by the Synod of Bishops on the renewal of 20th-century ideologies in Russia. Perhaps the bishops are afraid to use the word “communism” in this context, since we are supposed to feel ashamed for using such a word. Even though communists are taking over Latin America, we do not want to speak of a communist threat. We do not want to say that the riots in L.A., which have metastasized to upwards of 1,500 demonstrations, were organized by communists. We do not like saying that China is ruled by communists, or that Putin is a communist who pretends to be a Christian. We just do not like to admit that communism is a problem, since somebody might think we sound stupid. It is a career-ending thing, after all, to warn people about communism. But here we are, after everyone has denied the obvious, reading this surreal statement of the Synod of Russian Orthodox Bishops, who united with the Moscow Patriarchate in 2007, hinting that communism is returning to Russia:
The Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia finds it necessary to raise its voice out of bitter necessity, for we find that in a time of crisis and growing confrontation amongst nations, aspects of the Russian state and society are wandering onto an extremely dangerous path: instead of the promulgation of Christian repentance and purification, we observe in certain circles a return to a false, God-opposing ideology that prevailed in the last century. This return is fraught with harmful consequences. Should it continue, we fear that modern Russia risks being considered a dark stain amongst the nations, marked by a revival of spiritual corruption, instead of her being a radiant beacon of Orthodox Truth, which is surely the calling to which her long history of Christian piety directs her.

There is, in Russia, among certain circles, a “return to a false, God-opposing ideology that prevailed in the last century.” This old ideology (i.e., communism) is beginning to take hold in Russia once again, and the Moscow Patriarchate has issued a shocking “Concept” document that attempts to paper over the crimes of the communists against countless Christian martyrs. Why would the Moscow Patriarchate do this? The Synod of Bishops calls this a “silencing and distortion of history,” which it most certainly is. According to the Synod of Bishops:
An example of the character of this new activity was revealed when, in the mass media, a well- known professor — respected by many in Russia — recently stated that it was Tsar Nicholas II who in fact destroyed and ruined Russia, who even led it into war. Such may be this individual’s personal opinion, wholly echoing the Bolshevik propaganda of the early twentieth century; but to those who know how the Ekaterinburg murder unfolded, this man’s words about the Tsar, “I would have shot him myself,” sound ominous indeed. Yet this project of dismissing the spiritual renewal and truths gained through the Church’s glorification of the New Martyrs and Confessors, returning instead to the lies of a past age, is becoming more and more frequent. We regret that despite the conclusions of the commission concerning the authenticity of the relics of the Royal Family and their faithful servants, the Moscow Patriarchate has still not been able to come to a clear determination on this question.
Do not hold your breath. The Moscow Patriarchate is under the control of Putin’s KGB friends. There is not going to be a clear determination on this question. Stalin is to be glorified, not God. The Great Murderer’s image has been put up in Moscow, and in Volgograd. Why? Because communism was never eradicated in Russia. It went underground so that the West would disarm. And now it may be too late for the West to rearm.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte made a rather frightening statement earlier this month. Rutte warned that if NATO members do not commit to higher defense spending, then it is time to “get your Russian language course out or go to New Zealand.” The only problem with going to New Zealand, of course, is that you will have to get out your Chinese language course.
Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want peace, and President Trump keeps saying he will put sanctions on Russia in two weeks. But several weeks have now elapsed, and Trump does nothing. Perhaps references to the sale of one of Jeffrey Epstein’s old black books is having an effect. A communist from Vermont, Christopher Helali, bought one of the convicted pedophiles infamous address books for $425 off eBay in 2020 from a woman who found it on a Manhattan sidewalk. Helali hopes to sell it at auction for $50,000.
Better not put sanctions on Russia, Donald. This little address book might have your phone number in it. You ought to be careful, since the next item sold at auction might be a video recording. Watch for more blackmail hints. The heat is being turned up. The time has come to abandon Ukraine. Even better, abandon NATO!
Meanwhile, we ought to ask whether war in the Middle East might be followed by an expansion of the war in eastern Europe, then followed by a war in the Far East. What do you think? Am I one of those “political elite warmongers” whose rhetoric is calculated to raise tensions?

I think Tulsi Gabbard had in mind Zelenskiy, that he is rich and able to hide from a nuclear strike in a shelter. Didn’t Trump also accused Zelenskiy of toying with nuclear war by speaking up against Putin?
I heard that somebody analysed recent Trump texts. It looks like the person who wrote big chunk of his messages or edited them used Russian punctuation rules. They put commas before word but, instead of after and so on. It looks like this person is a Russian native with an acquired English skills.
As to Epstein connection, how can you walk in water and not get wet. With Trump’s weakness manifest in so many similar temptations, it is hard to believe that he withstood this one.
It is hard to think of Trump as avoiding temptation.
It’s difficult to believe that if there really were something sufficiently incriminating in the Epstein files regarding Trump, that it would not have already been used by the left/deep state to eliminate him long before this.
This might have been in the hands of communists working for Moscow. The CPUSA has always been a pro-Moscow party.
I recall news stories that while Trump had dined with Epstein, eventually they had a falling out when Epstein tried his moves on one of Trump’s employees at his resort. After that incident, Epstein was barred from ever visiting any Trump properties.

Sarah Blaskey, a Miami Herald investigative reporter, co-wrote a book called The Grifters Club. This story is in her book. It was a club member’s daughter, not an employee as I previously wrote. She reports Trump “kicked Epstein out after Epstein harassed the daughter of a member.”
They also saw spreadsheets listing members of Mar-a-lago.
“The member lists we saw were essentially spreadsheets,” Miami Herald reporter Nicholas Nehamas, also a co-author, told his newspaper.
“They listed current members, honorary members and former members. Red cells indicate the closed account details for former members. Most closed accounts are labeled ‘Resigned’ and then the date that the membership ended. Epstein’s account says ‘Account closed 10/07.’”
The irony of this book is that it’s a hit piece on Trump, but even the authors agree Trump kicked Epstein out.

For the truth’s sake, it seems not plausible to think that Trump was involved with Epstein in any such way as the rest of them were, and there could be a very serious reason why that is.

I wonder why Elon Musk said Trump is in the Epstein files? How would he know? Isn’t that libel? Seems a very dangerous thing to say. Of course he went back and deleted his X post, with no explanation. Then he shows up with a black eye a few days later, Elon says he was playing around with little X and asked him to punch him in the face. I am trying to connect the dots and will sound conspiracy theoretical. Epstein and his girlfriend were connected to KGB. Mask, according to some sources, also connected to Russia, almost like their agent. That tweet from Mask could have been a hint for Trump to behave, not just from Mask but from Moscow. They can have more information, or even a video, which can be in their sole possession (that even Democrats don’t have it). Judging from the expression on the faces of Trump and Putin after their meeting in Helsinki in 2018, Trump might have been shown that video in their private conversation. If he was not shown it, he heard something really terrible. I have never seen body language communicating so obviously shock and suppression, even subservience from any world leader before. It was more striking in contrast with gleeful triumph on Putin’s face.
As to Trump and his Mar-a-lago employees, wasn’t that woman Virginia Giuffre (who kind of killed herself recently, but nobody believes that she did it herself) working for Trump first in Mar-a-lago and then employed by Epstein and was seen on a photo with prince Andrew?
That connection to Robert Joch – Maxwell through his daughter (in prison now) of Epstein, Maxwell being a member a the British Parliament, born iin Eastern Slovakia and with changed name, with Kremlin connections, that of itself and the WHOLE operation of Epstein has the KGB fingerprints all over it.
So if we consider whether Trump is one of their assets, they most likely ordered him to be careful NOT to be involved in Epstein as he was their asset in this operation of his, collector of compromising blackmail data on various high positioned people, so the KGB doesn’t want the data released because they want to use it – and the way they use it is to extract cooperation from the target, recruit the target and then bring up the more serious blackmail – high treason for espionage and influence operations for the KGB…

But in France, while no longer rich, he had the greatest friendships.”
Wealth is its own burden and many of Trump’s flaws and hardships are a direct result of wealth and not knowing who to trust. I think Trump plays his cards carefully and keeps them close to the chest.

A recent Italian study connected sadism to narcissistic personality disorder, especially covert narcissism. The study was quite detailed and persuasive, and I spent a day studying it out of curiosity. It is an important aspect of our study, which is in large part “political ponerology” (if you will forgive a reference to Andrzej Łobaczewski). The driving force behind such people is malignant envy; that is, hatred of an admired person because of their qualities. The covert narcissist has two choices when faced with a superior person. Either kill himself because he is not equal to an admired person or destroy the person who is superior. It is the envy, according to this recent Italian study, which drives the covert narcissist to take pleasure in wounding or damaging the superior person. Here is the effective sadism. Emotional sadism. Emotional pleasure in the pain of another. Given Putin’s stature, and his natural inferiority complex, one would expect this kind of thing. Putin certainly shows a degree of grandiosity, yet he is restrained. Perhaps he cannot get the supply he needs. So that would make him a covert narcissist, driven by envy and often depressed. Sleep problems are indicated. I do not know what this man suffers. But it is certainly possible. Dictators of this kind are not normal people. Also, with Cluster-B personalities, there is an element of psychopathy. Such people can switch their personality for that of a psychopath. Here is cold empathy, exploitive, cunning, and always seeking victims. Gratuitously lying and victimizing others. Here is that form of self-affirmation referred to by Eric Voegelin when he commented on Nazis in his autobiography.
As for Nevzorov, he is brilliant. He makes an old criticism of Russia which has real truth in it. There is a backwardness, a depressiveness, an inferiority complex, in the Russians. Their soil is bad, their climate abominable. They have reasons to be depressed and evil. There is something evil in the Russian land. I have heard this from Russians.
What great insight, Jeff! And Queen Victoria would agree with you. Her favorite granddaughter was Czar Nicholas II ‘s wife, Alexandra. When it appeared they were going to be engaged, Queen Victoria tried to talk Alexandra out of it. She said she could find no fault with Nicholas, but Russia was a bad land, and she feared for her safety.

Warning. Graphic content. I see this kind of stories in Ukrainian a lot, but I can’t find them in English language sources. It shows the kind of people Russians are. It has a somewhat happy ending, but still, it is hard to read. It is a story of captivity of Oleksii Anulia, Ukrainian soldier.
“On the second day of the full-scale invasion, they met their father at the military enlistment office. Their brigades were sent to the village of Lukashivka, which they defended heroically. But the forces were unequal. On March 9, 2022, a heavy battle took place:
“In that battle, our soldiers numbered 140 against five thousand r.a.s.h.i.s.t.s., 35 tanks, and two armored cover vehicles for each tank. 250 orcs were killed, 31 pieces of equipment were destroyed. We had almost nothing to fight back with—only one NLAW was delivered to us.”
It was then that Oleksii was captured—a local resident handed him over while he was wounded.
At first, he was held in occupied Chernihiv region.
There, he was tortured and almost raped:
“They told me to strip completely. Tied my hands behind my back and hung me by them from the ceiling. My toes barely touched the floor. I still can’t raise my arms fully—it still hurts. I hung like that for six days. I was saved by a miracle—our artillery began working nearby. They took me down and let me dress.”
Next, Oleksii was taken to a detention center (SIZO) in Kursk.
“In Kursk, they were compiling a file on every prisoner: DNA, blood, nails, hair. They made 3D facial scans. They used UV light to check for gunpowder residue under the nails. They forced us to log into our social media accounts. They viewed everything, read all our messages. If you couldn’t remember your passwords, they beat you with full force. They wanted to track down who had taken part in Maidan or other protests on Khreshchatyk, who was against the Moscow Patriarchate, who supported the Tomos, who attended rallies for Poroshenko or Zelensky, whether you had relatives in Russia. Surveillance cameras filmed everything, and they had a huge video archive. They entered all the data into a computer. If someone from Maidan was identified, they were executed. They believed those people had overthrown their Russian order.”
The Don SIZO became a true hell on earth.
“They beat us every day, constantly and without reason. Wake-up at 6:00 a.m., then it starts—beatings at 7:00, during roll call at 8:00, before the yard walk at 10:00. Walk through the prison—they beat you. Approach the yard—they beat you. Enter the yard—they beat you even harder. Leave—strip search and beatings from all sides with batons. Keep walking—they beat you again. And that’s not even lunch yet. They might beat you for 15 minutes, or for an hour and a half. Blood would pour from my head, arms, legs, and anus. My ribs and fingers were broken. They deliberately beat my injured leg. On my right hand, they cut the tendon of my thumb with a rusty knife, saying: ‘You used this finger to shoot at our soldiers, to kill our men.’”
“Seven people would beat me at once. They bent me over. One slapped my face, another hit my knees with a baton, a third hit my fingers with metal. I was ‘lucky’ not to feel my thumb anymore, and that’s exactly where they struck. The rest beat my head, back, arms, and buttocks. Women beat me too—just as hard. There was no compassion. Not for me, nor for the younger guys—18–19-year-old conscripts. They scratched the number 2 onto their cheeks with nails to distinguish them from contract soldiers. In captivity, he says he had to eat worms and mice. His story about catching a baby mouse is unforgettable:
“It took me almost four months to catch a mouse. My hearing became sharper, so I could hear where it ran. My eyesight was worsening, since I was constantly beaten on the head and kept in a dark room with a flickering purple light. I was even reluctant to waste a crumb of bread to lure the mouse.
One day I caught it and struck it against a nail. I didn’t manage to kill it, just tore off some skin. The guards noticed movement in my solitary cell—strictly forbidden. They approached and opened the door. To prevent the mouse from escaping, I threw it into my mouth. I clenched my teeth to stop it from running down my throat. It gnawed my palate, bit my tongue. Its tail swirled like a propeller in my mouth. It scratched with its claws.
When they entered, I had to report—but I couldn’t, not wanting to let go of the ‘food.’ I hadn’t eaten for days. They took me out and started beating my right kidney. Blood came from my mouth. They thought they had ruptured my kidney: ‘Get up, this will make you feel better.’ But the blood was from the mouse bites. So the torture ended quickly that time. I crawled through filth on the floor—there was a leaking pipe. I barely had the strength to get up, but I felt joy in my soul.”
When prisoners complained of pain, they were taken to a doctor for examination—and then, once returned to their cell, were beaten precisely in the spot that hurt.
With wooden mallets, they broke three of Oleksii’s vertebrae.
“The FSB constantly told me I was the only one in the detention center who would not be exchanged. They showed lists with names highlighted in different colors. Only mine was in dark. After another round of torture, I returned to my cell. I had already prepared a twisted sheet to hang myself. As I was throwing it over the bunk bars, I suddenly saw the silhouette of my late grandmother. She had died shortly before the war. She was cleaning the sink and said: ‘Where are you going? You haven’t even bought New Year’s gifts for the kids.’ Grandma saved me…”
Back home, Oleksii found out that his father had died in Lukashivka.
“His brothers-in-arms said he led 40 men out of the encirclement. Then he went back for me and managed to destroy several enemy tanks with a grenade launcher.
That day, he and four other Ukrainian soldiers were captured by the Russians. Witnesses saw them being tortured and burned alive in the local church. Their charred remains were thrown by the roadside between the neighboring villages of Anysiv and Baklanova Muraviika. After a DNA examination, we reburied him in Chernihiv—only a year later.”
Today, Oleksii Anulia is a co-founder of the international charity foundation “The Price of Freedom”, which helps the families of prisoners of war.

I was shocked to learn that 40 million Russians lack sewer systems, and some hospitals don’t have running water. He makes the observes that Russia is parasitic on other countries; Moscow is a parasite on Russia; and the elite are a parasite on Moscow. Russia cannot help it. They depend on war, aggression, oppression and racism.
The backwardness of Russia is also seen in low numbers of public toilets. This is true in Moscow itself, for example, in the major hospitals.

To lessen the risk considerably of nuclear war against the US the Ukraine war needs to end.
It is impossible for Russia to take on the rest of Europe. Sure they could take Latvia etc but why risk ww3?
Both Russia and Ukraine don’t want to lose the war. One must lose. One of them losing means we are much safer for a while and that is Ukraine. If Russia loses nukes will hit Ukraine. And we hope it ends there.
If Ukraine loses we live to continue to strengthen our military, prepare for China.
Russia will not allow Ukraine to join NATO or NATO troops officially stationed there.
I don’t blame them. America doesn’t want Chinese or Russian troops in Mexico or nukes either. We (NATO/US) have pushed NATO too close to Russia. What do we expect? While we play cold war with Russia China continues to quickly build more ships, more bombers, hypersonic and nuclear icbms, etc.
We have spent billions, maybe Third of a trillion on Ukraine, and billions in weapon that takes years to replace.
We did gain experience of how the weapons worked, learned how drones have changed warfare, have gained 10000s of hrs of cargo, recon pilot flight experience even some fighters who flew back n forth. Take what we learned and leave Ukraine to Starmer and Germany the coalition of the willing.
I am not willing to get nuked over Ukraine. Most Americans arent either.
Also look at the trouble the Houthis gave a US carrier fleet! How many drones did they shoot down? 15? Pictures of drones laying on the ground, these drones were probably acquired by China or Russia for more reverse engineering. We did lose much equipment to Russia already like the tanks, Bradley’s, night vision, etc.
Cut our losses and prepare for China and hope China and Russia both don’t hit us or come rolling in thru Mexico and liberal Canada.

Your logic is obscene. You would allow an innocent woman to be raped in front of you and do nothing? Would you really? That is what we are seeing in Ukraine. I am not suggesting we directly intervene. That would be foolish. But Ukraine can defend itself, and should be allowed to do so. Also, we need NATO. Weakening Russia effectively weakens China. This is strategic reality. You need to understand this. The Russians and Chinese are planning a nuclear war against us whether or not we help Ukraine. If we help Ukraine our chances of surviving are better than if we do not. Ukraine is one country that has its military act together. I cannot say the same for most European countries, and I have no faith in our leaders — of either party — in Washington. If we sacrifice Ukraine we will return to our complacency and the danger will become too great to survive. Your idea of cutting our losses is a strange statement. The Russians are the ones suffering severe losses in Ukraine, not us. Why would we give them a country they cannot take on their own? Ukraine is our shield. And also, they are human beings who deserve our help. They are, after all, fighting our enemy.
We also pledged to defend the Ukrainians in 2004.
Let’s not turn our backs on these allies as we have done before to our a haunting shame.

This is when Reagan says the famous “Mr. GORBACHEV, tear down this wall!” line which is at the halfway point in his 30-minute remarks.

I had not remembered the end of Reagan’s speech where he talks about the Christian cross that regularly appeared on the East German TV tower. Lee Wheelbarger says that the Russians have given nuclear warheads to the Iranians. IF Iran attacks them, the Iranians could fire back, and they might fire back with a nuke. But given the failure rate of the Iranian missiles, and Israel’s successful interceptions, I do not think the Iranians have much of a chance. One never knows, of course. Iran would then carpet Iran with nukes. So the leaders there, in Tehran, had better be careful. Israel has nukes. Nobody should doubt it.
Well, that is apparently one of the objectives – to start the war this way, at least as part of the string of circumstances that will escalate and force the US to act, so that the Russian warmachine can then claim self-defense when the Russians hit hard with nuclear attack…

Firstly, have to admit that the thought had come about about such people who come with attacks and try to discredit the whole analysis about Trump, because they either don’t know any better, are too trusting Trump when they should in fact carefully examine his results regarding the national security and potential communist KGB/GRU operations involvement of his cabinet members and himself as well, or that person and the attacks are coordinated communist provocations for the purpose to discredit the Trump analysis once and for all.

During the years that Bayrock and Trump did deals together, the company was also a bridge between murky European funding and a number of projects in the U.S. to which the president once lent his name in exchange for handsome fees. Icelandic banks that dealt with Bayrock, for example, were easy marks for money launderers and foreign influence, according to interviews with government investigators, legislators, and others in Reykjavik, Brussels, Paris and London. Trump testified under oath in a 2007 deposition that Bayrock brought Russian investors to his Trump Tower office to discuss deals in Moscow, and said he was pondering investing there.
“It’s ridiculous that I wouldn’t be investing in Russia,” Trump said in that deposition. “Russia is one of the hottest places in the world for investment.”
One of Bayrock’s principals was a career criminal named Felix Sater who had ties to Russian and American organized crime groups. Before linking up with the company and with Trump, he had worked as a mob informant for the U.S. government, fled to Moscow to avoid criminal charges while boasting of his KGB and Kremlin contacts there, and had gone to prison for slashing apart another man’s face with a broken cocktail glass.
In a series of interviews and a lawsuit, a former Bayrock insider, Jody Kriss, claims that he eventually departed from the firm because he became convinced that Bayrock was actually a front for money laundering.
Sater “was always hustling and scheming, and his contacts in Russia were the same kind of contacts he had in the United States,” Lauria wrote in a 2003 memoir, “The Scorpion and the Frog.” “The difference was that in Russia his crooked contacts were links between Russian organized crime, the Russian military, the KGB, and operatives who played both ways, or sometimes three ways.”
Sater, who had been charged with racketeering and money laundering by the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn in connection with the 40 Wall Street scam, eventually decided to return to America and face those charges. He had a card to play, however: his knowledge, gleaned from contacts in Russia, about a small stock of Stinger antiaircraft missiles loose on the black market in Afghanistan that were of interest to U.S. intelligence officials.
In late 2002, Sater phoned Kriss and invited him to consult at Bayrock, bragging about a deep-pocketed investor, Tevfik Arif, who was partnering with him in search of bigger deals.
Arif, born in Kazakhstan, was a former Soviet official who had relocated to Turkey to make his fortune. He ran several upscale, seaside hotels there that catered almost exclusively to Russians, according to Kriss, and he had also redeveloped a shopping center in Brooklyn. At one point in his post-Soviet years, Arif also reportedly took over a former Kazakh state-owned chromium producer with his brother.
Like Sater, Arif had a home in Sands Point and Kriss says that Arif brought his children there from Turkey to learn English. (Arif’s representatives declined to respond to a list of questions about his business history, including how he met Sater and brought him to Bayrock, citing ongoing litigation.)
Bayrock was initially funded, in part, with a $10 million investment transferred to the firm by Arif’s brother in Russia, who, according to Kriss’s lawsuit, was able to tap into the cash reserves of a Kazakh chromium refinery. (A spokeswoman for Arif declined to comment on that allegation.)
A marketing document Bayrock once circulated to prospective investors noted that Alexander Mashkevich, an oligarch born in the former Soviet Union, was one of Bayrock’s primary sources of funding. Mashkevich’s firm, the Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation, was based in Kazakhstan and elsewhere and had interests in chromium, aluminum, coal, construction, and banking. (A person close to Mashkevich, who requested anonymity because of the Kriss-Bayrock litigation, said Mashkevich never invested in Bayrock.)
Bayrock never seemed to be short of money, however. According to Kriss’s lawsuit, the team running the little development firm in Trump Tower could locate funds “month after month, for two years, in fact more frequently, whenever Bayrock ran out of cash.” If times got tight, Bayrock’s owners would “magically show up with a wire from ‘somewhere’ just large enough to keep the company going.”
Helping Trump and Bayrock fund that masterpiece was a fresh influx of money from an Icelandic investment bank called the FL Group. Sater and Lauria, his longtime mob associate, had jointly recruited FL, introducing the firm to Bayrock and the Trump Organization. (I’ll have more on the FL Group and Bayrock in a future column; the firm’s former leaders, one of whom was later convicted of tax and accounting fraud, declined to comment or did not respond to interview requests for this column.)
Yet again, the Trump Organization — even though it signed off on the FL investment — appeared to care little about vetting a firm that came into the partnership through Sater. FL operated in a country with a porous, vulnerable banking system, and some investigators who scrutinized other Icelandic banks at the time said they suspected those banks of being conduits — unwitting or otherwise — for dirty funds from outside Iceland. (The FL Group collapsed a little over a year after it invested in Bayrock. The firm itself was never prosecuted; the leaders of a number of other Icelandic banks were prosecuted or jailed for crimes including money laundering).
Kriss said in an interview that an Icelandic competitor of the FL Group also contacted him to invest in Bayrock. When he took that offer to Sater and Arif they told him, he says, that the money behind Icelandic banks “was mostly Russian” — and that they had to take FL’s funds for deals they were doing with Trump because the investment firm was “closer to Putin.”

Trump finally got to Moscow in 2013, when Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov and his pop-singer son, Emin, hosted the Miss Universe contest at Crocus City Hall, a property they control on the outskirts of the city.
The math behind the event did not really add up, according to Tuesday’s report. The Agalarovs’ firm ended up spending about $12 million to host the contest. The Agalarovs paid $6 million in licensing fees and took on an additional $6 million in various other expenses. Instead of the Rtskhiladze proposal, the Trump Organization ultimately chose to pursue a deal during the 2016 presidential campaign with a developer named Andrey Rozov, who was in turn working with Felix Sater. “I came to Michael and said, ‘Michael, I have a potential Trump Tower deal in Moscow that we could do,’” Sater recounts in the Senate report. “‘I have a good developer. I want to speak to Mr. T.’ He said, ‘Sure.’ He came back to me and said, ‘Let’s go.’”
Cohen, also quoted in the report, adds his side of the story. “After the conversation with Mr. Sater, I told Mr. Trump that there’s an opportunity to develop the tallest building in the world in Moscow,” Cohen says in the report. “He asked me who it was with. I told him Felix is bringing the proposal, and he was like, ‘Oy, Felix!’ And I said to him, ‘But you have to understand, Felix is not the partner in this. He’s just the licensee’s representative. And he’s not involved. And Mr. Trump said, ‘Okay, keep him tight.’ Meaning, keep him on a tight leash.”
Separate from Sater, Rozov had his own set of entanglements. “A body of information suggests Rozov’s personal and professional network likely has at least some ties to individuals associated with Russian influence operations,” states the Senate report. “For example, Rozov’s associate Stalbek Mishakov has significant ties to Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch who the committee assesses undertakes a wide variety of Russian government influence operations.” Attempts to reach Rozov proved unsuccessful.
Momentum on the Rozov deal sputtered out in mid-2016, but Cohen did not tell Trump that it was totally dead, because he believed there was still a chance that it could be revived, according to the Mueller report. When asked, during a congressional hearing, why Trump’s business eventually stopped pursuing a tower in Moscow, Cohen offered a simple answer: “Because he won the presidency.”
